Project Description
Studio 2A Project 3; Designing a private garden around proposed construction.
Project Architect has requested advice as to how this building can be set in this landscape. This site is a steep slope down to a river with existing vegetation, the clients also have a list of expectations for this space.
Brief
Your clients, a couple with 2 children, have purchased a small plot of land (about 1,000m2) for their new permanent residence in a recent development (as yet unfinished) in “countryside” on the edge of the city. Their architect is to design a contemporary pavilion and you have been asked to advise on the setting for this dwelling. You are provided with the architect’s initial sketch of the 2-storey pavilion set within the plot. The plot is set on the edge of woodland forming communal public space within the development. You are provided with a list of the existing trees within the plot, which has views to the south and west. The architect recommends retention of the existing trees as far as possible, although the clients fear that the trees might obscure the views. In the near future, however, development will take place across the road and it is possible that views may eventually be obstructed.
Whilst students are not expected to produce detailed planting plans, they are to establish “families” of plants associated with the local conditions and to examine the shapes, forms and colours associated with those families.
Access to the site is indicated on the plan, at the south-east corner of the site. A road runs along the southern edge of the site. Parking for 2 cars within the site is required.
Your clients are concerned about privacy (want to see out but don’t want the neighbours to see in). They need you to advise on the treatment of the site boundary – should it be left open, or enclosed - and the design of any enclosing element.
Your clients have an extensive collection of contemporary art and wish to display at least one permanent piece in their garden, for which you need to design a setting.
Existing Trees
Quercus robur: 1, 3, 4, 9 and 10. Betula verrucosa Syn, B. pendula: 2, 5 and 13. Pinus sylvestris: 6, 7, 8, 11, and 12.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat about a potential project or learn more about what I do, I’d be happy to hear from you!
